IF YOU BUILD IT…
He took the fast track into his father’s footsteps and sped into the history books.
Meet NHRA Top Fuel Team Owner and Driver, Travis Shumake
At 35, Travis Shumake reignited a lifelong passion for racing that honors his family’s storied motorsports legacy. During the quiet of quarantine in his New York City apartment, he charted a path to fulfill a childhood dream once paused by his father’s passing.
Less than four years later, this dedicated leader, former foster parent, and experienced non-profit fundraiser is behind the wheel of a 335 MPH, 12,000 HP Top Fuel Dragster. As an NHRA Top Fuel team owner and driver, Travis exemplifies focus, determination, and the enduring spirit of innovation in motorsports.
Bridging Two Worlds: Racing and Authenticity
Born into a family steeped in the rich traditions of motorsports, Travis was destined to make his mark both on and off the track. His late father, Tripp, was a dominant force in the NHRA for decades, winning multiple titles and leaving an indelible legacy. His mother, Susie, a skilled mechanic and member of the Arizona Drag Racing Hall of Fame, ensured that racing was a cornerstone of Travis' upbringing. Growing up in Phoenix, Travis considered his childhood to be filled with average kid things—attending church, camping with famous NHRA drivers, and simulating burnouts in the Nitro Funny Car parked in the family garage… but only after cheerleading practice.
Travis was keeping the family tradition alive, racing competitive shifter karts, until tragedy struck in 1999 with the loss of his father in a motorcycle accident. Despite this profound loss, Travis channeled his resilience into forging his own path, blending his passion for racing with a focus on connection and inclusivity.
The Road to Leadership
During his college years, Travis’ natural charisma and leadership skills came to the forefront. He served as his university’s Student Body President and Homecoming King, setting the stage for his future endeavors. A published author and advocate for collaboration, Travis spends his “off weekends” as a lead wedding planner at one of New York’s top firms while also maintaining a career as a non-profit development officer at the Ali Forney Center, an organization focused on creating opportunities for young people.
Turning Heads in Motorsports
Travis is a fan and driver favorite who is redefining what it means to belong in the racing world. With his sharp wit, magnetic personality, and focus on tradition and progress, he has become an exciting new voice in motorsports—just like his father before him. Whether he’s behind the wheel or engaging with the community, Travis is proving that individuality and tradition can coexist in harmony. His presence, personality, and poise have made him a sought-after figure for brands and fans alike.
Beyond the Track
This self-proclaimed karaoke king and member of the Phoenix Business Journal’s 40-under-40 is more than just a racer. He’s a bridge between the high-octane world of motorsports and a modern perspective that values connection and integrity. By staying true to himself, Travis is creating a legacy that honors his family’s storied racing heritage while paving the way for others.
